Cable car system eyed for Boracay

Boracay cable car system was proposed by a group of private companies to Sangguniang Bayan of Malay, Aklan.

BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan – The first cable car system in the country is being eyed to be constructed for passengers to and from Boracay island.

The project is being proposed by a group of private companies which include the international transport company Systra, engineering and architecture firm Angelo Lazaro & Associates International and legal firms Cruz Marcelo & Tenafrancia, and Lazaro Bernardo Tiu & Associates.

The proposal was presented during the regular session of the Sangguniang Bayan of Malay, Tuesday.

Angelo Lazaro, representing the group, said the proposed project is eyed to be implemented in three to four years. It has an initial budget of PhP1.5 billion and will be funded privately, he said.

Lazaro said they are currently seeking to acquire a concession agreement with the Local Government Unit for the proposed cable car system.

The proposed project includes the construction of a cable car system from Caticlan to Cagban Port and vice versa.




With the cable car system, travel time to and from Boracay is eyed to be cut down to just four minutes. It aims to accommodate at least 4,000 passengers per hour per way.

Meanwhile, Lazaro noted that other considerations for the implementation of the project are still under study. He stressed they have chosen Boracay for its big potential.

“This will be an added attraction for Boracay as this is the first in the country,” Lazaro said.

He added that the proposal will help decongest the island and will lead for more development in the mainland.

“This is not just for tourists but also for locals working in Boracay,” he added.




Since there is no regulatory agency for the monitoring of cable cars in the country, the group is also pushing for the Local Government Unit of Malay to help in the regulation of its operation.

Lazaro said they will also seek the approval of the Aklan Provincial Government for the proposed project.

Meanwhile, the proposal has been referred to the committee on tourism and transportation of the SB Malay for further study. [via PNA]
